Building an emergency fund on an ordinary income

A realistic method for creating a financial buffer without cutting everything you enjoy.

TellTip EditorialPublished 6 August 2026Last updated 15 August 2026 4 min read

An emergency fund is not an investment. Its job is to be boring, available and untouched.

Start with a target of one month of essential spending, not six. A reachable goal is far more likely to be met.

Automate a transfer on payday, keep the money in a separate account, and treat it as already spent.
